Reluctant/nervous skier

We have a 6 year old and finally after a few ski trips and a fair few lessons at our local snow centre she has accepted that skiing isn’t terrible and would definitely be absolutely fine and safe on a blue. Trouble is, the idea of going on a chair lift scares the hell out of her and she has point blank refused to go with instructors on previous ski trips. Any tips for helping her to be brave and take the plunge? I’m not against bribery. Also, for future trips is there anywhere in Europe where you can get to some greens and blues without a chair lift?

Hi Rachel

Sorry for the slow reply, and thanks so much for your message. 😊

Im glad to hear that your 6 year is almost onboard!

A couple of things that spring to mind:

  1. Showing her videos of other little ones on a chair

  1. Making a song about it, before you go, that you can all join in with or else play her favourite tune that she can sing along to

  2. Yeh, of course bribery is always a good bet, a treat at the top which you can talk about during the ride or simply chocolate to eat on the way

There are plenty of places with beginner slopes that can be accessed by bubbles or gondolas which should be less intimidating and you can snuggle on the way up. There are also magic carpets in places like La Plagne and Les Gets.

After setting up messages on here we’ve realised that it was a bit confusing so have changed to a Facebook group, if you dont mind reposting this in there we can hopefully continue with advice and others can join in too, Im sure lots of people will have other ideas!

Cheers, Simon

Suggestions for early opening resorts?

Hi

I have suddenly found myself with a long weekend at the end of November. Was thinking about getting a ski weekend in but obviously not many places are open yet. Any suggestions for the most budget friendly options?

Hi Colin

Thanks for posting and sorry for the slow response.

By the end of November you should have plenty of options so I would combine checking Snow-forecast to see where has potential along with Skyscanner to see what flights are in your price range. Watch out for expensive transfers when not travelling on the weekend - driving could be a good option. How many of you are going together will be a big factor too.

There are a number of weekend specialists that we'd recommend and being Black Friday time you may find a decent deal.

We have now set up a Facebook group to replace the community here to avoid confusion. If you wouldn't mind reposting this in there then we can continue the conversation and hopefully you will get some valuable thoughts from others too.

We have lots more on this topic coming soon on our website and in the Facebook group plus we'll be posting Black Friday deals there shortly too... see you there.

Cheers, Simon

Where to go?

We are looking to have a ski break during Feb half term 2027. It will be myself, husband and 10 year old son. Then My mum and dad (64). We were hoping to do maybe 4-5 nights somewhere. Mum is a non skier, I haven't skied since I was 15, so the plan is to have some UK dry slope lessons and ideally get a family instructor for 3-4 mornings to take us all up the slopes together. We need to be somewhere that my mum has something to do whilst we ski then meet for lunch and have some good family activities for the afternoon. Initially I thought about a centre parcs in Germany but keen to explore other options. Ideally nothing crazy prices but I know Feb half term in France etc can be pricey.

Have you skied in Slovakia?

We went to Jasná and Tatranská Lomnica last season. They are both great options for an affordable ski trip. We didnt have enough snow in Jasná unfortunately but apparently the off-piste is amazing. More details coming soon in our upcoming blog. What is your experience here?

We love Puy Saint Vincent. We go with SnowBizz (one of the more affordable family ski holiday companies) and it’s so nice and easy to get around. The resort is small but has everything you need for a family ski holiday.
