Why Baqueira Beret Should Be Your Next Ski Destination

Updated: Oct 28, 2025

(Hint: Quiet slopes, amazing food, and your money goes so much further here)

If you’ve ever queued half an hour for a lift in the Alps or paid €20 for a sad plate of chips, let us introduce you to your new favourite ski spot: Baqueira Beret in the Spanish Pyrenees. Think wide-open pistes, actual tapas on the mountain, and hardly any queues, even during the school holidays.

In April 2025, we spent an unforgettable week here and honestly we can’t believe more people aren’t shouting about this place from the rooftops. It’s Spain’s best-kept ski secret, and we’re here to spill.

Check out our Instagram video see why we loved it

Why Baqueira Beret is a Hidden Gem

  • Delicious, affordable food (tapas and Rioja on the slopes - yes, please!)

  • Quieter slopes even in peak weeks - ideal for stress-free skiing

  • Far better value than the French, Swiss, or Austrian Alps

  • Varied, expansive terrain for all skill levels

  • Seriously underrated - most Brits still haven’t heard of it!

Why We Loved It (and Who It’s Best For)

Baqueira blew us away. From our ski-in/ski-out hotel with views of the valley to long, lazy lunches of steak and Rioja , everything just worked. No stress, no crazy prices, and no crowds.

We’d recommend Baqueira Beret to:

  • Families - especially those with mixed ski abilities (our boys loved it!)

  • First-timers who want a gentler intro to skiing without Alpine intensity

  • Skiers & snowboarders who hate queues

  • Adventurous types looking for off-piste or heli-skiing

  • Foodies craving Spanish flavour instead of overpriced fondue (not that we don't love a fondue!)

Our kids took lessons with BB Ski School and thrived – huge shoutout to Jordi, their instructor, who had them confidently cruising the whole mountain by day three. And the hotel food? Proper Spanish cooking – hearty, delicious, and so much to choose from.

Everything You Need to Know

About Baqueira Beret

Baqueira sits in the Val d’Aran, a beautiful, often-snowy valley in the Spanish Pyrenees. It faces north and gets plenty of Atlantic weather - meaning great snow conditions throughout the season. The resort spans three main ski areas: Baqueira, Beret, and Bonaigua, offering loads of variety and space to explore.

Why Ski Baqueira

  • 162km of slopes: 5km green, 76km blue, 61km red, and 20km black

  • 7 mountain peaks and a super smooth lift system (36 lifts)

  • Great for beginners and intermediates – our boys loved the wide blues

  • Advanced? Try the Escornacrabes couloir, if you dare

Even over Easter, we often had entire runs to ourselves. It’s the kind of place where you finish a run and go straight back on the lift – dreamy.

Off-Piste, Heli-Skiing & Freeride

Baqueira is becoming known for its off-piste scene - and yes, heli-skiing is legal here!

  • BB Ski School offers guided off piste tours.

  • Or you can hire local guides to go heli skiing or for freeride weeks using lifts and skidoos to reach untouched terrain. We’re already planning to come back just for this.

It’s not just us who rate it: The Freeride World Tour kicks off here every season - which tells you all you need to know.

How to Get There

We flew Stansted → Lourdes (cheaper and shorter transfer), but you can also fly via:

  • Toulouse (2.5 hrs) - more flight options

  • Barcelona (4 hrs) - longer transfer, but doable

Getting from the Airport:

  • Shared transfer (ours via Ski Inspired): £356 return for 4 people

  • Car hire: Great if you want to explore more of the valley

  • Private transfer: Quicker but more expensive

Where to Stay

Where we stayed - right by the main gondola. Super convenient for families.

We stayed at Hotel Tuc Blanc booked through Ski Inspired – ski-in/ski-out, amazing food (we had breakfast AND dinner included), pool, jacuzzi, kids’ games room. You’re right at the ski action, but it’s quieter at night.

Vielha

A charming Spanish town 20 mins down the valley with great food and nightlife.

  • Stay here for a local vibe and better prices, often around £1000 cheaper than staying up by the ski lifts.

  • Ski Inspired runs daily shuttles to the slopes from hotels like Hotel Riu Nere.

Après-Ski

  • Baqueira 1500 → Chilled vibe with a glass of Rioja or DJs at Baqueira Bar

  • Vielha → Tapas bars, late-night drinks, buzzing nightlife (we loved our evenings here)

  • Don’t miss Tiffany’s, a club in Baqueira for dancing!
